Sometimes women are faced with having to conceal a pregnancy. Whether it be because they don’t want their boss to know yet, they’re not quite far along enough to feel comfortable to make an announcement, or maybe they simply have another personal reason. After a certain point, concealing a baby is pretty impossible unless people are only looking at your face. However, for those first few months, there are some fashion secrets to hiding that bump.
In the early months you can sometimes get away with wearing non-maternity clothing in larger sizes, however after about month three, in most cases, your clothing can begin to feel restrictive, and it’s probably a good time to visit the maternity section of the store. If you’d like your maternity wear purchase to be more undercover since you’re trying to hide your pregnancy at this point and don’t know who you’ll run into, you can find many maternity wear stores online.
Follow these tips for toning down that bump, and increase your chances of no one finding out your little secret…. Yet!
Long Scarves
Long Scarves are a great accessory to drape around your neck so that it hangs loosely over your midriff. A flowy scarf is suitable, or a large oversized fuzzy scarf. If it’s winter time, you can pair this with a coat and some fuzzy mittens.
If the end of your pregnancy falls during cold months, consider buying a maternity coat, since you will not be able to zip up a regular coat in your third trimester.
Maxi Dress
A long and flowing maxi dress is the perfect item to hide a belly. The seam is usually under the bust creating an “empire waist” silhouette and drawing the eye away from the waist.
This non-form-hugging ensemble is great for any season. In the summer it keeps you cool by allowing air to flow, and in the winter it can look great with a nice pair of warm tights and boots and winter sweater.
The versatility and knack for hiding the belly under the loose fit make this one of the best choices to wear when you don’t want anyone knowing you’re pregnant yet.
Ruffled Shirt
Ruffles are a belly’s best friend. The forgiving texture conceals everything from stains to bulge. Ideally, patterned ruffles are the best choice as the camouflage is increased even more so.
Try not to choose anything that is ruffled at the hips as this can create a widening effect which isn’t ideal for looking slim.
Loose Sweaters
A loose sweater can be worn on top of a loose shirt for a casual look. Whether it is at home or in the office, sweaters are one of those items of clothing that can work in either setting.
Don’t zip or button up the sweater as this will make it more form fitting. Loose and open is the way to go.
