Lady Gaga’s debut album The Fame was a foretelling of her critical and cult success as a singer, but there’s another thing that seems to make her infamous: her weird and wonderful fashion. Gaga’s outfits have been known to range between two extremes: couture and catastrophe. See some of her most avant-garde and out-of-this-world outfits.
Her Best Fashion Moments
Most celebrities opt for comfort instead of high fashion when they travel, but not Lady Gaga. The singer has been known to sashay down the tarmac in the latest creations from Versace, Louis Vuitton, and Valentino—every time in platform heels, enabling her to glide at altitudes most frequent fliers wouldn’t dare reach. 2014 seemed to be a tame year fashion-wise for Mother Monster as she promoted Artpop, her latest album, but safe doesn’t mean boring. Her glam game was still on point in exquisite gowns by Perry Meek at HBO’s Golden Globes After-Party, Alexis Mabille Couture at the MusiCares Person of the Year Gala, Versace at the 86th Academy Awards, and a metallic stunner by Romona Keveza.
Lady Gaga has long considered Versace’s Donatella her muse, modelling for the brand and often sporting Versace gowns on the red carpet. The great Alexander McQueen was another one of her favourites, honouring the late designer by wearing a gown from his last collection to the VMAs. The pop star also manages her own creative production team called Haus of Gaga, modelled after Andy Warhol’s Factory, to handle all her costume and prop needs. Moreover, in an interview with Larry King, Gaga revealed perhaps her most unlikely fashion influence: Princess Diana.
Then it gets weird
Many of us have that nightmare where we step out in public without pants and suffer from mortifying embarrassment, but for Lady Gaga, it’s one of her trademark looks. What seemed at like a major wardrobe oversight at first eventually led to Lady Gaga being known as that “no pants” lady. At least she wore pantyhose?
Sometimes it’s just downright hard to pinpoint if that’s really Lady Gaga. Just ask Eminem.
If you’re looking for Halloween costumes, look no further than Lady Gaga. Here she shows you how to rock a hippie Venus de Milo, a paper lantern, a transgender don, and what we can only assume as a cross between a fan and a spaceship.
Really, really weird
Lady Gaga’s Kermit dress isn’t an art project of a Little Monster in kindergarten. The outfit is the work of Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, French nobleman and Moroccan designer, who also created a coat of teddy bears worn by Madonna. Your plush toys are fair game. So are mops and anything that resembles a chicken head.
Gaga also has a knack for flashy entrances. Remember that time she came down the red carpet on a man-operated horse and her egg womb? We’ll never forget.
Lastly, no Lady Gaga outfit list would ever be complete without the controversial meat dress designed by Franc Fernandez who chose prime cuts of flank steak from his family butcher to put on his pop star client. Despite the initial shock, TIME recognized the dress as one of the year’s top fashion statements. Next to Gaga, Cher looks pretty tame. And that says a lot.
